Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

How does the Seventy-Two compare to older Rane Mixers?

Just like its predecessors, the Rane DJ SEVENTY-TWO is built using the same high-quality Rane DJ components you've come to love and trust. Expanding on this legacy, the SEVENTY-TWO features an all-steel chassis and brand-new MAG THREE faders that are 160x stronger than Rane DJ's previous non-contact magnetic faders.

The SEVENTY-TWO is also built with the same pro-level audio-circuitry as the classic Rane MP2015, which means high-end AD/DA converters, 116dB of dynamic range, and low-noise/high-gain preamps all contributing to a crisp, clear, studio-quality response.

On top of all this, the SEVENTY-TWO adds more flexibility and personality to your set with two dedicated Flex FX engines, an intuitive Touch FX panel, and 14 pad performance modes that are selectable per deck, including a custom pad mode to create your own MIDI assignments.

When the SEVENTY-TWO is connected to your computer and Serato DJ Pro is running, the software will prompt you to install the drivers the necessary drivers, and the control panel application.

Do I need a Serato DJ Pro License to use the Seventy-Two?

The Rane DJ SEVENTY-TWO is Serato DJ Pro enabled. You do not need a full license for Serato DJ Pro as long as the SEVENTY-TWO is connected to your computer.

Do I need to use the Rane DJ TWELVE Turntables with the Seventy-Two?

The Rane DJ TWELVE is the perfect accessory for the SEVENTY-TWO but the mixer has (2) CD/Phono RCA inputs so you can connect CD Players or Turntables and perform using included Serato NoiseMapcontrol Vinyls and CDs.

The Faders

What type of crossfader is used in the Seventy-Two?

The Rane DJ SEVENTY-TWO comes complete with (3) contactless MAG THREE tension-adjustable faders (2 channel/line faders, 1 crossfader).

Is the crossfader user-replaceable?

All the MAG THREE faders on the SEVENTY-TWO are fully user-replaceable and interchangeable. Visit our article here for more instructions on removing the crossfader and making adjustments:

Is this the same crossfader used in older Rane mixers?

No. The Rane DJ SEVENTY-TWO is shipped with our newly designed MAG THREE contactless faders. The carrier is made out of a stronger composite material designed to be 160 times stronger than the magnetic faders in our older Rane DJ mixers.

Can I set the cut-in for the faders?

The Cut-In controls the amount of dead space between a fader's closed and open positions. You can adjust the Cut-In positions on the SEVENTY-TWO through the Main Menu (press Shift and View/Menu) by selecting the Cut-In Adjust option. You also have the option to adjust the Cut-In positions within the Rane SEVENTY-TWO Control Panel and save your setting as a preset. Visit our article here for more instructions on removing the crossfader and making adjustments.

Flex and Touch FX

What are Flex FX?

The Rane DJ SEVENTY-TWO has 11 internal Flex FX that allow you to easily take control of your performance and apply a little extra creativity. You can customize the default state of each effect individually by using the Flex FX option in the SEVENTY-TWO menu. Here you can change settings like the cutoff amount, feedback and depth, and even turn unused FX off so it's easier to find your favorites in a pinch. The internal Flex FX include

  • Echo
  • Hold Echo
  • Duck Echo
  • Reverb
  • Filter
  • Phaser
  • Gate
  • Flanger
  • Delay
  • Ping Pong Delay
  • Beat Breaker.

Note: The Flex FX on the SEVENTY-TWO are post-fader.

What are Touch FX?

The Touch FX feature turns your SEVENTY-TWO display into a classic X/Y style FX processor. You can apply the Touch FX by simply sliding your finger across the display. Sliding on the Y-axis applies a high pass (HPF) or low pass (LPH) filter. Sliding left to right on the X-axis increases the BPM rate for the active internal Flex FX.

Can I stack Serato effects with the internal Flex FX?

Yes! Serato FX and the internal Flex FX can be stacked simply by turning them all on. Using the effect routing feature at the top of the display, you can even assign all 8 effect slots to a single deck/channel.

Note: The software effects are pre-fader.

I don't use all of the Flex FX. How can I make the FX easier to assign?

Inside the Main Menu (hold down the menu/view button), you will see a Flex FX option where you can turn the Flex FX on and off. This way you will only see your favorite FX when searching for your FLEX FX during a performance. Touch the green circle to the left of each effect to turn it on or off and use the wrench icon to access each effects internal settings.

What is the benefit of two Flex FX engines?

The Rane DJ SEVENTY-TWO pushes the bar with 2 independent Flex FX engines. Unlike previous Rane DJ mixers, having two independent effect engines means the ability to assign different effects to each deck independently. But with the additional routing options, you also have the option to assign both Flex FX engines to the same deck, giving you a total of 2 internal effects, and 6 Serato effects that can be assigned to a single simultaneously.

Touch Display and Display Modes

What is the size of the touchscreen on the Rane DJ Seventy-Two?

The Rane DJ SEVENTY-TWO comes with a 4.3’’ full-color touchscreen display for live monitoring of your tracks, searching through your Serato library, adjusting effects, and tracking of virtually all settings in the mixer.

How do I navigate between the different display views?

There are four main display views: Library View, Waveform View, Main Menu, and Effects. Press the View/Menu button to cycle between the Library and Waveform views. To access the Main Menu, press Shift, and View/Menu, or hold the View/Menu button. Press the Effects button to access the Effects view.

What information will I be able to see in the Library View?

The library has two views that can be selected by swiping down on the display from the top. In the full view, you will see the track name, track length, artist, key, and BPM. The simple view will show only track name and BPM but will fit more tracks on the display at once which can make searching easier.

In Waveform View, how can I prevent accidentally touching the song overview and scrubbing the track while it's playing?

The Waveform View will allow you to touch the track overview, on the left and right of the display, and scrub through the track by dragging up or down. But, because this is easy to hit accidentally, you may want to turn it off during playback.

In Serato, open the Settings and check off the box for Disable needle search during playback under the Control Preferences. This will prevent the possibility of accidentally scrubbing while the track is playing back. The setting can still be overridden by holding down the Shift button and dragging a finger across the track overview during playback.

Does the display support multi-touch gestures?

Yes! Use two fingers on the display to pinch to zoom or zoom out on waveforms in the Waveform View.

Performance Pads

What can I do with the Performance Pads?

The Rane DJ SEVENTY-TWO has 16 Akai Pro performance pads, 8 on each deck and with individual mode controls. See the list below for the different pad modes and a quick description of the functions.

  • Cue: Each pad assigns a hot cue point or returns the track to that hot cue point.
  • Pitch n' Play: Each pad plays the track from a hot cue point at a different transposition (adjustable by semitones). You can use this if you have installed the Serato Pitch ‘n Time DJ Expansion Pack.
  • Auto Loop: Each pad triggers or releases an auto-loop of a different length. The software’s loop grid determines the size of the loop.
  • Manual Loop: Each pad will return the track to a loop you created and saved earlier. The pad layouts for the two banks are identical.
  • Saved Loops:  Hold Shift and press Auto Loop / Man Loop to access Saved Loops. In this mode, all 8 pads are used to activate or deactivate a saved loop.
  • Roll: Each pad triggers a momentary loop roll.Pad FX:  The pads select and activate effects. The top row of pads selects the type of effect, and the bottom row triggers and controls the length of the effect.
  • Sampler: The pads will control the sampler in the software. The pads each trigger a sample at a specified volume (you can assign the sample and its volume in the software).
  • Fader FX: The pads will mute and unmute the deck’s audio signal in a way that emulates crossfader movements toward that deck.
  • Flip: If you have purchased the Serato Flip Expansion Pack, you can access the Flip control by holding Shift and pressing Sampler / Fader FX (4). If you have not purchased the Flip Expansion Pack, this will be available as a Custom Pad mode.
  • Slicer: The eight pads represent eight sequential beats—“slices”—in the beat grid. The currently playing slice is represented by the currently lit pad; the light will “move through the pads” as it progresses through each eight-slice phrase. You can press a pad to play that slice.
  • Transport:  The pads correspond to different transport controls. The software will automatically enter Internal Mode when you do this (if you are using a Twelve controller with Seventy-Two, the software will always be in Internal Mode).
  • Slicer Loop:  The pads behave identically to the pads in Slicer Mode, except the eight-Slice phrase will loop rather than move forward continuously through the track.
  • Custom Pad Sets: You can create up to 3 customized Pad Sets using Serato DJ Pro's MIDI mapping feature.

Can I set Pad Modes differently between decks?

Yes. Each deck has its own identical sets of pad modes that are assigned per deck.

Can I customize the pad colors?

The pad colors can be customized in the Cue Mode using the Serato DJ software. Right-click the Cue Point trigger button for color options.

What are the custom pad sets?

The Custom Pad Sets mode allows you to MIDI assign a pad to a Serato DJ Pro function of your choice. This is a great way to bring additional versatility and control to your performance without the need for a secondary MIDI controller.

Effects Toggle Switches

What do the effects toggle switches do?

The SEVENTY-TWO includes dual die-cast aluminum FX paddles for quick and easy effect triggering. Once the Flex and/or Serato effect(s) have been activated on the effects screen (press the corresponding FX button to the left or right of the display), use the toggle switch to apply the effects to the channel.

Flip the toggle switch up, or away from you, to latch the effect on, or flip and hold the switch in the down position, towards you, to temporarily apply the effect. Release the toggle back to the center position to deactivate the effects.

Can I reverse the operation of the switches?

For some performers, the toggle switches may be easier to operate if the latch and hold settings were in opposite positions: latch in the down position and hold in the up position. In order to make the SEVENTY-TWO as flexible as possible, the two switches can easily be removed and flipped 180 degrees to reverse the operation.

Control Panel and Preferences

Where can I download the Control Panel?

If you are running Serato DJ Pro 2.0.2 or higher, the software will prompt you to install the control panel and driver once the SEVENTY-TWO is connected to the computer. The SEVENTY-TWO Control Panel can also be downloaded directly from the SEVENTY-TWO product page, under the Downloads tab.

What can I do with the Control Panel?

The Rane DJ SEVENTY-TWO Control Panel will give you access to virtually every setting in the mixer including fader cut-in, footswitch assignments, deck settings, and more, as well as indicators for USB connectivity and optimization options like buffer size.

Do I need to use the Control Panel app?

Technically no, but it is recommended so you can create a backup of your settings. The control panel application allows you to make deeper adjustments to your SEVENTY-TWO and save your changes to a preset file on your computer to be recalled later on. Saving a backup can be useful if you use the SEVENTY-TWO in different settings where different presets may be necessary, or even if you just want to recall your settings after every show.

Can I save a backup of my preferences?

Yes and we recommend doing this whenever you make crucial changes to your settings. The control panel makes it extremely easy to save and load your backup settings file to a new SEVENTY-TWO or restore your current unit back to your preferred settings. This makes it easy to reset your mixer the next time you trade-off with another DJ.

Footswitches

What can I do with the Footswitch Input?

You can use the footswitch input on the SEVENTY-TWO to MIDI assign other functions or to activate/deactivate the FX on Deck 1 or Deck 2. To assign the footswitch, use the Rane DJ SEVENTY-TWO Control Panel or navigate to the footswitch settings inside the onboard Main Menu.

What footswitches are compatible with the input on the Seventy-Two?

Any momentary switch that has a ¼ inch plug will be compatible with the SEVENTY-TWO. The input also supports up to a three-switch footswitch with passive-contact closure.
